I was able to see the restoration all completed on the Medora Covered Bridge last Saturday after attending the Valonia Festival. And, I was both amazed and pleased at the result. They have restored it beautifully, all ready for another 100 or so years. I was publisher of The Brownstown Banner newspaper 1965-72. When the state highway people announced the bridge was going to be taken down, to be demolished, I immediately wrote an editorial about the decision and stated the the bridge should be saved for its historical significance. A short time later, it was announced that a new road would be built around the bridge and the old bridge would remain. I moved from that area shortly after that, and was unable to keep abreast of the situation, but do know that it remained in an ever-growing delapidated state for many years. On several occasions I had the opportunity to mention to local people that the bridge should be repaired. Finally, money was found to restore the bridge. I want to commend those who were instrumental in that movement and point out to the public that many more years of "bridge enjoyment" have been provided. I want to also thank Morris Tippin for the interest he has shown and his continued work on the project.
I have always felt my editorial about the bridge was instrumental in changing the state highway department's mind about demolishing the landmark bridge.
